HOW DOES THE CHRONOS PRIZE WORK ?

The Chronos Prize is a unique literary prize that is grounded in the organization and functioning any prize competition needs, including :

¨
A selection committee, composed of researchers, specialists in children's literature, gerontologists, teachers' representatives, booksellers, senior citizens, and colleagues from the public and private sectors.

¨
A selection of works on the theme "Growing Up, Growing Older" :
The illustrated books and novels read by the children have been published in the preceding year by any of the publishing houses and were written or translated into French.
Several American publications were among the Chronos selections and some have even won the Chronos Prize, for example, "Grandfather's Journey", by Allen Say in 1996. Thanks to the Chronos reputation, "Joker", a work of the American-born writer Susie Morgenstern, who won the Chronos Prize in 1997 and 2000, will be translated by an American publisher.

¨
A jury of children, along with teachers and librarians. All the children are volunteers and undertake to read all the selected publications. They are extremely enthusiastic, and grow more so every year. They are hardly frightened by the theme "Growing Up, Growing Older".

¨
Categories for every age : five categories of books are selected : illustrated books for nursery school children, and novels for primary and middle school children. In 2001, 13 and 14-year-old schoolchildren (7th and 8th grades) will take part in the Chronos Prize. A Chronos Prize for adults is also being developed to promote awareness on the theme.
¨ The Chronos Prize is officially awarded in a prestigious cultural setting : Every spring at the Paris Book Fair (Salon du Livre) the results are announced in the presence of well-known figures from the world of culture, teaching and gerontology, as well as various financial sponsors
¨ Every voter receives a certificate of membership in the Chronos Prize jury.
THE CHRONOS PRIZE, SUCCESS AND SOLID REPUTATION

The Chronos Prize has already won sufficient success to confirm that the approach is worthwhile. The basic conclusion that can be drawn is that young people want and expect the chance to think about themes like growing old, senior citizens and even death. Thanks to the Chronos selections, parents and teachers have an opportunity to bring up and discuss these subjects that have become taboo in the modern world.
Every year more classes take part in the Chronos jury ;
The Prize is continually expanding to include more countries ;
The media, including the daily national and regional press, has shown steadily growing interest.
The private sector partners of Chronos Prize have remained loyal and have fully integrated Chronos into their communications plans and everyday activities.

A solid reputation
In 12 years, Chronos Prize has gained recognition from the relevant institutions.
